There have been many great men in the history of the world who have sacrificed people and things, which they loved for the cause of humanity. One such great human being was Peer Budhu Shah. He belonged to the town of Sadhura, which is near Ambala. Peer Budhu Shah had great respect for the tenth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh ji. Like him Peer ji also believed in the equality of all religions and the brotherhood of humankind.
When Guru ji was residing at Paonta Sahib, the rulers of the neighboring hilly areas became alarmed at the rise of his popularity. They were jealous of him and thought that he was a threat to their kingdoms. Along with the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, they launched an attack on Guru ji to destroy him. When Peer Budhu Shah came to know about this he sent his platoon of soldiers to help Guru ji. But these soldiers betrayed Guru ji and joined the forces of Aurangzeb and the kings.
Then Peer Budhu Shah himself came to fight for the Guru along with his two sons and his followers. A fierce battle took place at Bhangani village near Paonta Sahib. The kings and the emperor had professional soldiers on their side but common people were fighting for Guru Gobind Singh because they loved him. Guru ji had people from different religions and different walks of life on his side but all of them fought valiantly for him and for a common cause.
They won this battle, but many people lost their lives. Peer Budhu Shah’s sons and many of his followers sacrificed their lives for the Guru. Guru ji was very pleased with Peer Budhu Shah and appreciated his help. He was also extremely sorry for his loss and told him to ask for anything that he desired. Peer Budhu Shah replied that he was happy that he could be of any assistance to the Guru and he was pleased that his sons and followers had sacrificed their lives fighting for a just cause. If the Guru wanted to give him something then it should be the kangha with which he combed his hair. Guru Gobind Singh ji granted his request and thanked him for his love for him.
